For me music is such a core to who I am. It reflects who I was, what I’ve encountered, the emotions I’ve experienced and just an over all signature that simbolizes my life. I have explored most every genre of music and the styles that I stick with from childhood all the way to the music I DJ today maintains as a constant inside my heart. Ill be honest here, I’m not one for names of particular songs or memorizing who produced that track in which year at what studio, hell… I still dont have the lyrics memorized to some of my all time favorite songs but in my opinion; that doesn’t 100% matter. I think that many will argue that point and I encourage it because it really defines who we are. Thats a totally different topic though… After writing this post it turned into a real history into who I am, what I experienced and how music was part of it.

Ill try to take this in a series from when I started listening to music that I wanted to listen to and up to today. I started with tapes and a lot of them were sort of random picks because I didn’t really know what I liked so I got a lot of Madonna tapes, Roy Orbison, and I think the first tape I ever wore out on my yellow sony portable sport tape player was Roxette. Holy crap that was like 1986 maybe 1988. What I remember is being in Poland with my brother in law and my nephew camping at the lake that my parents got married. While we were there Poland was playing the world cup, I was catching some sort of crayfish and I think I even chased a few girls around… hehe. That might have been the beginning of listening to music endlessly and oh boy did I love to rewind that tape. For those of you that may not know what tape is… yeah I’m not gonna go there.

Let me summarize from there up to middle school. My brother really exposed me to so many different genres of music and I can’t thank him enough for it. From Bob Marley to Depeche Mode I looked up to everything that he wanted to share with me and crank over my little boombox. hahaha… oh that boombox live forever… How random is this, my first CD I ever bough was the Jetsons Movie Soundtrack. Yeah, thats right. The Jetsons. I think at first it was more the excitement of having a CD and then the songs grew on me. My neighbor looked at me all crazy for it. So FFW to middle school. This is when I was introduced to Rap. Well actually YO! MTV Raps introduced me to it (So happy I lived to see the beginning). I tried the whole baggy pants, shirts that went down to my knees with a picture of some spray paint can in the bottom left corner of the shirt and to tell you the truth I’m not sure how much I really like it and I was more just trying to fit in. That time in my life was more a phase and it lasted up to my first dance in 6th grade where I heard Red Hot Chili Peppers – Under the Bridge. It was an instant conversion to Alternative just like that pill that turned me raver from country. Yeah, ill get to that.

The Alternative rock era really defined the childhood problems I was going through. A little insight into what I use to deal with was alcoholism, abuse and lack of friendships. STP, Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Red Hot Chili Peppers and so many more were the release I needed to run from the pains I endured. Little did I know that those bands would live with me until the now and probably forever. Now with the Alternative came Rock and Heavy Metal… Oh my parents really loved me when I played Megadeath or Pantera and Metallica. 3 things I remember about, ok 4 things that I can Share. 1: Coming back from Great America with my ‘cousin’ (not really, we were both just Polish) Marta, we drove past Shoreline Amphitheater and realized that we were missing the Nirvana concert… I think it was the last concert in the Bay before he shot him self. (R.I.P. Kurt, you died to soon.) 2: Playing Metallica – One at Martas house so many times and head banging so much that I literally, no seriously, literally could not hold my head up and I had to use my own hands to keep it afloat. 3: Marta bought me the Metallica Black album for my birthday at the Skating Rink (actual wheels) and it was one of the best presents I ever got for my birthday. I’m going to state that the album was their best album to ever be released. 4: The Metallica box album came out and we got our hands on it. Watched the live performance of Metallica on VHS in my room so loud that my parents heard all of the cussing, came upstairs pulled the VHS tape out, took the box set and it was never to be seen after that day… I saved the stencil though and painted it on my binders!! HA!

Highschool has to be the hardest time in a persons life. You are going through puberty, its all about fashion, status, cars, dating, clicks and everything else that comes with it. Now let me just say that up until high school I think that I can count the amount of friends I had with all my fingers and toes. I was not a popular guy but that first dance… the Aloha dance, Michelle Nessel picked me to be her boy friend and oh did my status change over night. I instantly had 3 football players hate me and I became friends with the most popular kinds in school because I landed the head cheer leader. Now let me remind you… I was an alternative rock kid that Rollerbladed. Yeah, long hair, metallica shirts and the head cheerleader. I had to adapt fast… but that really didnt happen because when my Grandma Passed (Love ya Grandma) my freshmen year in High School I became quite the angry little boy. I never really gave the top 40 music of that time a chance and I maintained my passion for Alternative and Heavy Metal.

Just a side note… I was in band from 5th grade through 12th grade playing in the Full Orchestra, Full Band, Quartette, Jazz Band and Honor band. I played the trumpet as well as the french horn. In 5th grade I tried the violin (i dont know why) and it didnt really capture me. From there I wanted to play the Saxophone but we couldn’t afford it so I bough a trumpet at a little music shop that my mom made payments too. Nice of him to be that generous. And what kind of metal head musician would I be if I didnt try to play the guitar… Did that for a few years too. Jazz was my favorite because it was very complex, fast moving at times and you got to play solo’s and be very expressive. It also challenges you to try new things and push you limits. Miss that the most from my band experience. No band camp though…

So at some point in high school, around mid sophomore year or later I ended up becoming really good friends with the country click and it sort of began a whole new world for me. Friends from freshmen year also started to listen to country and we really dove deep into that genre. From the cowboy hats to the boots and buckle we would hop in our trucks, blair our country music and hit up all the rodeo’s and country clubs in the bay area. Oh yes… country. Now Country music is moving. Its real stories. What I love about it is the emotion that people put into their songs. The performances of the artists and of course the line dancing. So I didnt play an instrument I learned to line dance. So much so that I started teaching it during which I was learning country swing… There are so many different artists that I loved to listen to from Garth Brooks, Montgomery Gentry, Charlie Daniels, Hank Williams Jr. and Sr., and even the Dixie Chicks and Shania. The music was so much fun and to partner it with an activity like dancing was an experience that I will not forget. There was a lot of whisky and beer involved. To much whisky. I even turned my nephew country!! Got him a cowboy hat and all. My friends got him drunk at a party we had too… I said no drinking and they would secretly pass beers to him and he would run upstairs, chug the beer and come back for more. Good times.

So after high school and into my years of I have no idea what I want to do with my life so I will continue to drink and live care free my friends discovered raving. We were all into VW bugs and my friend Jason met Tamara who was a raver and country girl and she took them to their first rave -EDIT- (wait… don’t quote me on that, i’m not 100% sure that was at the way it happened the rest is accurate though.). I was all against it and yelled at them up and down about how its bad this and that. Somehow they convinced me to try it once. No pressure right… Try it once, if you dont like it you dont have to do it again. So my first rave was at the old Q-Sar that closed down in Redwood City. We were shuttled in from across the freeway and during that shuttle ride I dropped for the first time. I really don’t remember much of the rest of the night because let me just say that I was riding high. So that is the pill that turned me raver. The next part we were at I had already bought raver pants and made some candi. It was the F8 campout in 2001. It was in the woods, 250 people, it had a beautiful garden and it was just such an unforgettable place and experience. Once the sun dropped down we got ready for the night ahead… a blue dolphin later I find myself floored infront of the speakers for… well I have no idea how long… But after I heard Mars play that epic set that Night I knew what I had to do… Become a DJ.

Starting my DJ career came to fruition a lot faster than I had expected. My sister (not by blood) lived a few doors down from me and little did I know… she had decks. A 2 channel Numark mixer with 2 Numark belt driven turntables! I borrowed those for probably 6 months. Thank you Kelly. I would not be here today with everything I have without those decks. =) My first set of records actually came from Tower records. I didnt know anything about the dance scene but I wanted to emerse myself in it. Shortly after I figured out that Tower Records was crap for good vinyl I began my crate digging at Remix Records in San Mateo. I really wanted to play trance and everything that Mars and Mystre were playing but I had no clue where to get their records. This is actually where Tamara comes in because Tamara actually took us over to House On The Hill in Hayward and introduced us to DJ Dingo and Reseese. (Sorry Daryl I butchered it I know…) Now this is where I got to play infront of my first crowd. It was one of the most nerve racking and exciting experiences ever. What made it so awesome was the encouragement that everyone in the house was learning and at the same point in knowledge. That was the true birth of DJ Foxx and my trance classics. And my Heelies. We partied there on Wednesdays. Oh yes… full blown parties on Wednesdays. At that time I looked to DJ’s in our local scene so Dyloot, DJ Denise, Morgan, Mars, Mystre and the rest of the top DJ’s in the bay for my musical inspiration. I knew what good songs were. What the hits were but I could never find any until I actually shopped at Skills DJ Workshop. Oh that was a money/time pit for so many of us but many was it all worth it. I’d do it 2 fold if I could do it again. Sitting in a record store and digging through the crates to hopefully find a gem that no one else had touched yet was amazing. Now my first gig, actual booking came from being friends with the promoters at Remix Records. James Dub booked me for my first show called Banana, opening up the upstairs room that was in a wherehouse above a 15ft half pipe. From Out of the Blue to Save the Rave I was droppin all the hard hittin tracks and I actually semi filled the room. That booking sent me forward to many more great adventures.

I hope I’ve kept with my inspirational music story throughout this because my life, the one you just had a glimps of is reflected through the music I listened to at the time. It really defined who I was and am today. I’m going to skip the next 10 years in the story and come to you as of now. The times have changed so much and the music has evolved because of the technology and all the artists that have really driven the path of production. I must say that my all time favorite artist is Sasha. The album that did it for me was Involver. It was such an amazing beyond now sound with such a seamless flow that to this day it lives on my iPhone, iPod, multiple CD’s and every computer that I need to be on. Its not the style of music that I DJ. Thats sort of on a different realm. The music I DJ is inspired by Sasha but the artists I choose from are Umek, Robert Babicz, Adam Parker, ThreeSixty and more. I’m more into the Techno, Tech House genre right now but I still love my Trance. For Trance, hands down, the most influential and creative artists are Myon and Shane 54. Their style is a whole new ball game. Second to them are all the artists that they remix and do mashups of. I can’t think of a bad MS54 track and they are pushing the envelope.

I’ve written so much but I need to say that I would not have the fiance I have, my child, and friends that are my family still to this day without the electronic music scene. Paul, Dan, Kristie, Jeremy, Seth, Jade, Statch, Lena, Shawn, Mea, Sierra, Mo, Jimmy, Jason, Kevin, Sonic, Happy, Jeff and so many more… (I’m sure ill add on to this list.) you have been an integral part of my life as a DJ, Producer, Friend and most importantly the person I have become today. From the music that has inspired my path to reach you and the life I live today, I am inspired by all who have been a part of it.

Made it this far? Thank you for taking the time out of your day to read my story know that much more about who I am today.

I knew from the last time that Boom played in the Bay Area he liked to have the DJ before play slower and out of respect I wanted to end my mix at around 128 bpm and at a lower tone but if I knew he was going to play rockin Electro Trance… I think that my outlook on my mix would have been 100% different!

Ill be honest in saying that this isnt my favorite mix that I have compiled but I’ve been asked to share it. I did the mix inside Ableton Live and I’m finding that I want to switch over to Traktor and the Audio Kontrol X1 from Native Instruments to do my mixing in. Its much more familiar in terms of DJ mixing. Ill still producer and master inside Live though.

RED is a San Francisco based production company throwing some amazing 18+ parties at Kelly’s Mission Rock. This event especially will be awesome because I am playing at it! I’m really happy and totally excited to be play at this show and you can find me rockin the dance floor from 10:30pm – 11:30pm. Headlining the show will be Bryan Kearney along with Spundae’s own FEI-FEI.

You can purchase tickets now!!

Direct from Bryan’s site, here’s a few snippets from his Bio:

“Bryan Kearney began DJing in the year 2000 and in this time has established himself firmly on the international dance scene. His sets contain the very best in upfront trance and techno with the emphasis always on energy and the unexpected.

He was a permanent fixture on the airwaves of Dublin throughout 2002 and 2003 with prime time shows on Energy Fm and Kiss Fm providing the capital with the very best in brand new material each week.

In 2005, he completed a remix of one of his all time favourite tracks, the massive Lost Emotions by Fire & Ice. The track has become bigger than first thought possible with the remix been signed for full release by the legendary Bonzai Records.

2007 was a big year too with solo tracks and remixes well received right across the trance spectrum. His debut solo E.P containing More To Life and Punchline had massive success with More To Life becoming the biggest selling download ever on Discover Records.

2008 continued on from where it left off with Bryan receiving two nominations at the Irish Dance Music Awards – Best DJ & Best New Artist.

2009 has seen him taking his performances and productions to the next level. He was voted runner up in the Best Producer category at the Irish Dance Music Awards, second only to John O’Callaghan

2010 is shaping up to be a massive year for Bryan with a significant increase in solo material, vocal tracks and collaborations right across the musical spectrum. This year will also see him launch his very own label entitled KEARNAGE (Carnage) Recordings.”

You can find more by going to his Bio page.

FEI-FEI is an extremely talented DJ from Spundae LA and her energy is going to rock your socks! Girl Power is about to receive a new twist. This ferocious international lady of trance, has captivated audiences worldwide with her pounding mix of trance and techno and you can be sure there’s some serious competition for the male DJ’s around the world. But don’t let her looks deceive you–She’s at the top of her game and has taken the industry by storm. In the past few years she has signed to several of the most critically acclaimed record labels in dance music—Armada Music, home to Armin Van Buuren and Vandit Records, home to Paul Van Dyk. She’s also signed to Discover Dark, John Askew’s label, as FFW, featuring an even darker side of Fei-Fei. She has wowed fans all over the world with a slew of chart topping successful productions, remixes and mix compilations and has garnered respect from several of the industry giants–Tiesto, Armin Van Buuren, Paul Van Dyk, Carl Cox, Above and Beyond, and Eddie Halliwell. With residencies and gigs across the world, regular radio appearances and releases on the most respected labels, nothing can stop her. Fei-Fei has made her mark and is about to take over.

Sound System Syndicate Radio brodcasts once a week on Sundays at 6pm PST. The show is hosted by DJ Zion and DJ Reign with guest mixes from local and international talent. The music is always rocking and it is usually in the realm of Electronic. From House to Trance as well as underground favorites of UK Hard House and NRG. This week I was a guest on the show and I couldnt wait to get my new style officially recorded for all of you to enjoy. I played a bunch of new tracks all in the world of Tech, Techno and Tech House.

I actually just found new inspiration for my style and its really a direct reflection of UMEK. Here’s his bio from his site: “Uroš Umek is internationally acclaimed music producer from Slovenia, seducing the masses with his own music blend for more than a decade. Always on the look for new sounds and determined to challenge every existing cliché in music industry, he managed to define his own vision of vanguard techno. Sure, this would not happen without the support of his loyal peers who’ve joined him on the production platforms such as Recycled Loops, Consumer Recreation and Astrodisco, with which they defined “Slovenian techno sound” and successfully invested it as an important driving force on the global club scene.” You can actually download a lot of promo mixes from his site so go and enjoy some new flavors of tunes!

I found myself in a position of wanting new music. Not DJ music but bands or just a new sound that I have not explored yet. I guess after listening to electronica for 7 years its time to really salt and pepper my collection. I mean, yeah I have all my alternative rock and some other goodies like John Mayer but nothing really new. I reached out to one of my friends who really has a diverse range of music she listens to and she came back with a list of about 20 artists to check out. I told my coworkers I was venturing into a new world of music and read them the list and by their expressions and voices of excitement I went with these Artists and download a bunch of really amazing music!! If you have any recomendations, send them my way through my contact page.

I’m going to go in alphabetical because I still cant pick my favorites:

Artist: Burial
Albums: Burial and Untrue
Genre: Dubstep/Garage

I really enjoy the darker side of this as well as the flow of the albums. It really shifts your head from really typical mainstream music and gives you more of an artsy expression.

Artist: Hot Chip
Album: Made In The Dark
Genre: Pop
Talk about a party starter. This band has got a great groove, really good mainstream licks that catch you and they just have a ton of energy. You can really hear it in how the album is put together and I can imagine a really fun show if I ever see them live.

Artist: M83
Albums: Before The Dawn Heals Us – Saturdays Youth
Genre: Electronic
I actually knew about M83 from DJ Sasha’s Invol2ver (Most amazing album of all time) but I never actually sat down and listened to their full length albums… boy was I missing out! Their style is really epic and full. The stories they talk about really go with how the composition of the music flows. Its really brilliant and I would tell people to stop and open their mind to M83 any day of the year.

Artist: Owl City
Album: Ocean Eyes
Genre: Electronica
I actually discovered this on my own and as soon as I played it in the office I feel like our entire mood changed. Everyone started to smile and it felt like we all needed to get up and do a group hug! I think that if I need to brighten up my day or just get put into a good mood, this is where I am going to land. Really fun band to listen to!

Artist: The Postal Service
Album: Give Up
Genre: Electronic
These guys make me want to get up and dance. They have really simple catchy beats and they also really make me smile. I think if you heard some of their tracks you would find a new band to listen to at any point of the day.

Artist: The Presets
Albums: Apocalypso – Beams
Genre: Electronic
These guys are a little more dirty electro sounding with what seems like tastes of punk in them. I could see this being a totally rockin show at peak hours of the night and filled with raw energy. They are totally a hipster style band but I dig their sound.

Artist: Ratatat
Albums: Classics – Ratatat
Genre: Rock/Indie

Quite an amazing sound here. Their guitar licks catch me and really know how to express my emotion. I found that these two albums go hand in hand and I can never tell when they change in my playlist. I think this was so far my favorite find as a band to listen to everyday.

So those are the few bands I have had a chance to get through. I still need to check out some more like Hercules & Love Affair, Junior Boys, Linus Loves, Mike Snow, Phoenix, Simian Mobile Disco, Royksopp and Santigold.

The escape into your world of peace and pure clarity brings forth an emotion that cannot be touched nor explained; however, the visual experience that is cast through that emotion can be witnessed as Lukasz dives into the creative soul behind each piece of music that he plays.

Lukasz’ career as a DJ started over 9 years ago, and to this day his passion and love of the elegant compositions still flow through as a journey. His style is influenced and derived from many genres; rather than a single musical style. From the moment that he starts until the end his set, each piece of music selected is thought through to create a sort of never ending story that will make you dance, indulge, engage and be a part of the energy that radiates from the speakers.

Over the years, Lukasz has done productions with various crews such as Skills, Audio Metamorphosis, Telic, Alibi and others from around the Bay Area. Starting with his passion in the Rave scene, his progression naturally brought him to the club world. He later started his own company, Clubberz Cure, which focused on showcasing local talent who share in Lukasz’ style, taste and love of music, and he had the pleasure of playing with some of the greats such as Kyau and Albert, Mark Norman and Darude. With the rise of technology and being in the heart of the Silicon Valley, Lukasz started a Podcast called “PitchControl,” which was a bi-monthly show that gave the local artists a platform to expose their mixes.

Lukasz’ passion has led him to meet some amazing people along the way and with them, Shawn Yapa with whom he’ll be creating new events under Liquid Sun. With the start of this new beginning comes a new life to the music that Lukasz plays. Get ready to be casted away by the latest artists in Tech House, Minimal, Progressive House and Trance as Lukasz delivers a new vision to you.

Lukasz – Drifting

This is a set made by me through the art of being a DJ. The careful planning of sequencing melodies to make smooth transition between the tracks enjoyed through a vibrant soul. To dance is to let go but also make steady rhythm of the thoughts that make you a person.
Jam with your band anywhere without getting the cops called on you! JamHub is a 4-6 person piece of beautiful hardware that gives you volume controls for each person as well as headphone outs. I know, crazy! Check out the full post!

One of the most common problems with live bands is rehearsals. Everyone in your neighbor hood hates them and you can never get away with really being able to crank your amps and shake some windows in the house. Back when I would get together with a few of my friends and rock out on our guitars we would really annoy everyone around. Now that technology has evolved and people need solutions for these situations, a company came up with a solution that is sure to make your live and your neighbors health way better! I randomly came across this site called JamHub.com and I had to tell you about it.

So JamHub is a piece of hardware that links you and your fellow band mates together. Sounds like a mixer right… well its more. You have your choice of 4-6 people being able to play at the same time (3 different units), Each person has their own controls for their headphones as well as controlling the volume of the other people around you. This alone is amazing and then they took it to the next level. You have a SD card input so you can hit record directly on the unit and record your jam sessions. Not only does it have a SD card slot but it also has a USB out so you can run it into your sequencer or any other recording software, (No midi mapping or separate channel recording). JamHub also gave you some of the most common effects such as delay, reverb and modulation for some added fun to your jam sessions. They actually left out an EQ because they dont want this unit to be something that alters the sound, just a solid unit to join you all together. One thing that I really like about it is that the knobs have two levels, one is for the effects and one is for the gain. So each one of the knobs on has its own controls for each person individually.

Overall, they really thought about people who need to do a lot with very little. They have three models, the ‘BedRoom’, ‘GreenRoom’ and ‘TourBus’. Basically 4-6 people at the same time. And drummers… Mic your set to and run it to a mixer and send the mains to the JamHub to give everyone stereo drums in their headphones!! Also, they have remotes, yes remotes that you can addon so that you can have all the controls in the palm of your hand instead of walking over to the main unit! All in all… I wish I had one of these when I was 16!

My shots from the Infected Mushroom show at the Regency in San Francisco as well as a little about the band a video from their latest track, "Smashing the Opponent".

Infected Mushroom is by far my absolute favorite Electronic Band. They rock a stage just like any other rock star out there and they bring down the house! Their style is considered Psy-Trance which in the US is usually found as a Niche style but if you find your way to South America or Israel… Lets just say thousands and even into the 5 figure stats for Psy-Trance shows. Maybe one day I can make my out to a festival.

Originally Infected Mushroom cam from Israel as a duo, Duvdev and Ires, the produced and played DJ sets. As their production gained strength and they pushed the edge of their style and the genera itself and really flourished into the now 4 piece traveling band with their Amazing and Humble drummer Rogerio and true to the Axe Guitar Player Tommy. I’ve pretty much fast forwarded to the current from the beginning but you can find everything you need to know on their website.

So normally I get a chance to hang out with them (we’ve become friends) but I didn’t get to the show until about 15 min before they went live so I had to stay in the crowd. Not a complaint at all because if you have ever witnessed their show being in the crowd is crazy amazing. The vibe from the people and the interaction of the band makes them so prodigious it feeds the energy and the whole venue goes crazy. I wanted to make my way backstage but I stayed at the front of the stage and snapped over 800 photos. Lets just say it’s not easy to get into the middle of a hungry crowd to take some photos but amidst the sweaty cheering people I made my slow camera in the air side step to the front and took some shots that I hope they use one day. New MySpacers is what I told Tommy actually. Here are a few samples of the shots I took and if you would like to see more, check ‘em out on my flickr account!

You should click on the images to see them full! My favorite is the black and white. And the one of me, Tommy actually took my camera in the middle of their performance and took photos from the stage! Now if you guys want to find out more about the band check them out on their website, www.infected-mushroom.com. Here is the newest release from them in full music video form, “Smash the Opponent”.
